What is "truly good condition" for a vintage watch? | A watch with few scratches is not necessarily a good watch
Customers looking at vintage watches sometimes ask,
"The fewer scratches a watch has, the better its condition, right?"
At first glance, it might seem that way.
However, having been involved in sourcing and assessing the condition of vintage watches for over 20 years, and having handled numerous timepieces, my answer is a little different.
Having few scratches and being in good condition are not the same thing.
What we consider "truly good condition" is how much of its original appearance the watch retains.
Good Condition Means Retaining the "Original Appearance"
Vintage watches are not meant to be as pristine as new ones.
What we value are:
The original case.
The original dial.
The original crystal.
And the history the watch has lived through.
We believe that the value of a vintage watch lies in these elements being naturally preserved.

Scratches can be removed, but a case cannot be restored to its original state.
Scratches on a watch can be made less noticeable by polishing.
However, a case that has been ground down cannot be restored to its original state.
That being said, we also don't believe that never polishing it at all is the correct approach.
If the case is originally in good condition, a minimal finish with a very soft buff can clean up minor scratches without significantly altering the case's lines.
At Ante, this minimal finishing is our basic approach.
On the other hand, trying to erase deep scratches can round off what were originally sharp edges, changing the entire silhouette of the case.
We do not perform such finishing.
Because once lost, the original case lines can never be restored.
We carefully inspect watches that appear "too clean."
When sourcing watches, we inspect those that appear outwardly clean with extra caution.
Is it beauty that genuinely maintains its original condition?
Or is it beauty created by excessive polishing?
The difference can sometimes be indiscernible from photographs alone.
Especially for rare Cartier models, where few exist, knowing what the original case lines were like is a crucial factor in making a judgment.
At Ante, we commercialize watches after confirming not only their appearance but also their original form and silhouette.
The crystal is also part of the watch's history.
"Should I replace the crystal if it has scratches?"
This is a question we often receive.
However, at Ante, we do not unnecessarily replace crystals with new ones.
Especially for Cartier models from around the 1970s, some use crystals manufactured with the techniques of that era.
The unique texture and individual differences not found in current mass-produced items are part of that watch's unique charm.
Of course, if there are major chips or practical issues, we may suggest replacement.
However, we generally do not replace crystals for minor signs of use.
We prioritize preserving the originality of the watch rather than making it look brand new.

The value of vintage Cartier is not determined by the number of scratches.
The shape of the case.
The texture of the dial.
The uniqueness of the crystal.
The internal condition.
And how much of its original appearance the watch retains.
Only by comprehensively checking all of these factors do we consider a watch to be truly in good condition.
