This model inherits the DNA of the 222 series, created in 1977 to mark the 222nd anniversary.
In the 1970s, luxury sports watches emerged:
1972: AP Royal Oak
1976: PP Nautilus.
The Royal Oak and Nautilus were designed by Gérald Genta.
Because Vacheron Constantin’s design was similar, it was said at the time that Genta had not designed it, but that was not the case: the designer was Jörg Hysek.
He also worked on designs for Rolex and designed Breguet’s Marine.
The model that emerged from this lineage in 1996 was the Overseas.
Conceived as a watch for traveling across the seas, its caseback features a sailing ship crossing the open ocean, an image befitting its name.
