Among vintage Cartier watches, the Stepped Tank is a rare model known only to true enthusiasts.

This is Ref. 25716, a model sold in New York. It is an especially rare example, with the lowest production numbers among the variations. It also features a rare black dial.

With a 27.5 mm case, this is a well-proportioned boys’ size.
The Stepped Tank was produced in very limited numbers around 1970—approximately between 1973 and 1976—in New York, Paris, and London.
There are subtle design differences depending on the region.
The NYC model differs considerably in details such as the shape of the case back, the presence or absence of screws, and the interior case construction, making it the most finely made version.
It is said that only around 2,000 examples were produced.

This example has a rare black dial, and well-preserved examples have become difficult to find in recent years.

Overall, it appears to be in excellent condition.
The case has only minor scratches and no dents. Although there are a few areas where the plating has become thin, it remains in good condition with its original plating intact.
The case back has some minor scratches but is relatively clean. The serial number and other markings remain clearly visible.
Because much of the original plating remains intact and the watch is in good condition, it has not been polished.

The dial has several areas of faint cracking overall, but these are only subtly visible depending on the lighting. The crystal and other parts have some minor scratches and signs of use, but they are original and have therefore been left as they are.
Overall, it appears to be very clean.
The buckle is an original Cartier gold-plated buckle from the period.
