Cartier Ronde Round Wide Bezel 1970s Manual Winding Ref. 7980
When discussing Cartier, the Tank is, of course, indispensable, but the Ronde is also a model with a long history.
In recent years, models from before the 1970s, especially those equipped with movements from Lecoultre or EWC, have become popular among collectors, leading to soaring prices.
This particular piece is a very rare Ronde model, a Cartier creation from the early 1970s.
While not the same item, a Maxi Ronde, slightly older than this one, was recently featured on HODINKEE and garnered some attention.
This watch differs from a standard Ronde due to its wide bezel and "flying" Roman dial, making it a considerably rare specification.
The dial features guilloché work, and instead of blue hands, it deliberately uses black hands that match the dial.
The double-line bezel of the case has a hairline finish, an incredibly elegant design not seen today.
The movement adopted is based on a Puzoo movement.
(Confirmed as genuine by Cartier repair estimates, so it is an authentic item. Repair estimate details can also be provided.)
This is a rare Ronde model that symbolizes Cartier's history.
I believe it offers a different kind of appeal compared to the Tank models.
The dial is a guilloché type with the "Cartier" inscription. (It does not have "swiss" or "paris" markings.)
The movement is Puzoo, a brand that existed before being absorbed by the current ETA.
Regarding its condition, the case has minor scratches but no significant dents.
The hairline finish is slightly faded but still present.
The case back has some scratches and dents, but it is in good condition. (Considering its manufacturing date, some distortion or dents might have been present from the beginning, so it is likely within an acceptable range.)
To maintain its original condition, it has not been polished, and minor scratches are left as they are.
The dial has some light dirt and stains, but it is relatively clean considering its age. There are no cracks.
The original glass is in very good condition with only minor scratches. There are no scratches that impair visibility.
This model is eligible for restoration services at Cartier's home country.
This service respects originality by maintaining the original dial and movement as much as possible during restoration.
Although the dial is already quite clean, Cartier's high standards would ensure a beautiful restoration, so you might consider sending it in if you wish.
The buckle is an authentic Cartier D-buckle from the same period.
The band is a suede strap custom-made by our shop.
