Vintage Cartier is not complete at the moment of purchase.
What truly matters is that the watch continues to keep time on your wrist, unchanged, 10 or 20 years from now.
We believe that this, too, is part of the “value of a watch.”
That is why Ante does not select watches based solely on whether they can be sold.
Can we continue to take responsibility for repairs and maintenance after the sale?
Is it a watch you can continue to use with confidence in the future?
We bring each watch to market only after considering all the way ahead.
Vintage Watches Are Not Finished Once They Are Sold
With new watches, there are many models for which the necessary parts can be easily ordered from the manufacturer.
Vintage Cartier, however, is different.
Some watches that have been in production for decades require repairs that cannot be handled by a standard overhaul alone, while for other models it may become difficult to secure internal parts in the future.
We explain in more detail why the term “overhauled” alone is not enough to make a judgment in “Does “Overhauled” Mean It Is Safe to Buy?.”
That is precisely why, rather than thinking only about the moment of sale,
Can it still be repaired 10 years from now?
Can it still be used 20 years from now?
We believe that considering these questions is part of the role of a vintage-watch specialist.
At Ante, We Consider Repairs in the Future
For this reason, Ante gradually collects and stores movements and internal parts for repairs.
We do not do this simply to increase our inventory.
We do it so that we can continue repairing our customers’ watches, even years into the future.
With vintage watches, new parts cannot always be ordered whenever needed.
That is why we believe one of our important responsibilities is to carry the parts we have today into the future.
We also do not sell watches we have acquired if we determine that we cannot take responsibility for their repairs in the future.
Of course, if we relaxed these standards, we could increase the number of watches displayed in our store.
But what we want to increase is not our inventory.
It is the time our customers can spend with their watches with peace of mind.
Taking Responsibility Beyond the Sale
This is also why we currently do not accept repair requests for watches purchased from other stores.
Precisely because our time is limited, we want to support customers who choose their watches at Ante for many years to come.
Selling a watch means taking responsibility for that watch’s future as well.
We value that responsibility above all else.
The Value of a Vintage Watch Lies in Its Future
After more than 20 years of working with vintage watches, there is one thing I am certain of.
The value of a vintage watch is not determined solely by its beauty on the day of purchase.
It means being able to repair it with confidence 10 years from now.
It means being able to continue wearing it on your wrist, unchanged, 20 years from now.
I believe it is only when we look that far into the future that we can truly call it quality.
I sometimes think about the future of this industry.
A vintage watch does not fulfill its purpose the moment it is sold.
It is part of a culture whose value has been preserved by being passed down through generations, repaired time and again, and connected to the next generation.
That is why I feel that if we focus only on selling and lose sight of the maintenance and repairs that follow, it may become difficult to preserve this culture itself for the future.
For that reason, we believe that it is important not only to establish quality standards, but also to determine who will evaluate those standards, how they will do so, and who will take responsibility through to the end. We explain this approach in more detail in “Who Brings a Vintage Watch to Market Matters.”
Ante's Philosophy
For us, selling a watch is not the end.
It means seeing that watch’s future through.
It means ensuring that it remains a watch you can use with confidence 10 and 20 years from now.
It means introducing only watches whose future we can take responsibility for.
That is the quality standard Ante values.
